Sailing around the world has always been a dream for many. But the idea often comes with the assumption of a massive budget. The reality? Most stories of global sailing adventures feature high-end yachts and eye-watering costs. That can make such dreams seem impossible for the average person. And when you factor in an electric drive instead of a traditional diesel engine, the budget only grows. Making the idea of a budget electric sailboat conversion seem out of reach.

Despite these challenges, Jeanette and I refuse to let financial struggles derail our goal to sail around the world. Over the past couple of years, things have been incredibly tough. At one point, we were left with almost nothing. If not for the incredible support from family, I’m not sure where we’d be today. Our determination led us to pursue a budget electric sailboat conversion — proving that global sailing dreams don’t have to come with a massive price tag.
Finding Ocean Strider: A Wreck with Hidden Potential
Instead of giving up, we got creative. Enter Ocean Strider – our 1979 Cobra 1050—a 10-meter, dual-keel sailing boat. At first glance, it looked like anything but a dream vessel. Initially, the asking price was £16,500, but the boat was in a dire state. The moment I laid eyes on her, my gut reaction was: NO WAY IN HELL! Damp, mildew-ridden, with a sagging lining and shockingly basic fit-out – it seemed beyond saving.
Yet, Jeanette insisted we at least take a closer look. Once we stepped inside, something shifted. Yes, she was in terrible condition, but she was surprisingly spacious. After some back-and-forth negotiations, we secured Ocean Strider for just £12,500 – which was a relief as, quite frankly, we had no other option. Despite its condition, this affordable electric sailboat conversion project sparked new hope and excitement.
Being unemployed at the time, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Every inch of mould was scraped away, the exterior was stripped and repainted, and the interior was gutted and refitted. It took everything we had, but the transformation was remarkable. Now, fellow sailors in the marina call Ocean Strider one of the best-looking boats around.
